Reader Privacy

Reader accounts and comments

Creating a free ReadMyCritic account is separate from subscribing to our newsletter. Registration asks for a public username and an email address. Choose a pen name if you prefer. WordPress manages your password and login cookies; passwords are not included in welcome emails.

Your public username and approved comments and replies appear on the site. Your account email is not displayed with your comments. WordPress also records comment timestamps, IP addresses and browser information to support moderation and spam prevention. Comments and account records are retained until removed by the site owner.

Account forms use a hidden spam field and short-lived request limits. The request limits store salted hashes of network addresses for up to 15 minutes. Account and password emails are operational messages, not newsletter subscriptions.

Optional newsletter

The newsletter uses the official WordPress.com subscription service operated by Automattic. Submit its separate Subscribe form if you want email updates. The service handles confirmation where required, new-post notifications and unsubscribe links. Registration never subscribes you automatically. See Automattic’s privacy policy for how the service processes subscriber information.

Managing your information

Use My Account to update account details or change your password. To request access to, export of, or deletion of your personal data, contact the site owner through the Contact page. The owner can process requests with WordPress’s personal-data export and erasure tools. A working contact method and final retention policy must be provided before launch.
